Obituary for Cathy "Closs" Shannon

Cathy J. Shannon was united in Heaven with her one true love, James R. Shannon, Sr on June 21st 2022. She truly was never the same after he lost his battle to cancer just over two years ago. Cathy was born on March 28, 1955 to Harold & Carole Watkins Closs in Lowville, NY. Beloved sister to Harold (Marlene) Closs, Jr., Camden, NY, Debbie (Jim) Moore, Florida, and Julie (Chuck) Mikitin, Taberg, NY. Cathy & Jim were united in marriage on July 28th 1973. They were the traditional blue-collar family… he worked as many hours as he could to provide for his family, and she took great pride in making sure that he always had a packed lunch for extra-long shifts and/or a hot meal waiting for him when he got home. Cathy & Jim raised two wonderful children… Kelly J (Mike) West, McConnellsville, NY and James R. Shannon, Jr., World traveler/Gypsy. Aside from her own kids, Cathy was “Mom” to many…one of Kelly’s childhood best friends, Denyel Miller spent as much time with Cathy as she did her own mother, also Florence DiGennaro Reed, who lived with Kelly and her family at the tail end of her high school years. You see, that was the thing about Cathy…she would always make sure that everyone felt special, welcomed and loved. I can recall many overnight stays with friends and close family/cousins, where we would all either sit around together watching scary movies while munching on endless snacks and drinks provided by “Mom” / “Aunt Cathy” or we’d listen intently as she loved to educate us all with her life’s lessons and words of wisdom. Kelly would go to upstairs to bed and leave everyone else downstairs, as she would easily bore listening to her mother go on and on …but, we never did ! I would be remiss if I failed to mention Cathy’s favorite little sidekick, her Jen Ben/Benny (niece, Jenny Shannon Kimball) who lived right next door, but probably spent more time with her favorite Aunt Cathy than her own mom ! Cathy was first and foremost a homemaker…but, did work locally at times throughout her life. Like the old Ren’s Store in McVille or local area medical offices as front desk receptionist. Cathy had a kind heart, a listening ear and a caring demeanor…which is why she was best suited for any customer service job, because she could easily strike up a conversation with anyone ! Her children and her grandchildren were her pride and joy, much like her husband Jim…they were her reason for living ! Sadly though, sometimes when a couple is prematurely separated by an unexpected passing…the other half just can’t seem to bare a life without the other. We have to believe that she was just lost without him … but, now they will be together for eternity ! Cathy was predeceased by her beloved parents and husband. She is survived by her loving children and grandchildren…Gage R. Mundell, Dakota W. West & fiance’ Delaney Alberico and Ryeland MJ West, many, many nieces, nephews, friends and family she gained through Jim.   Funeral arrangements under the direction of LaRobardiere Funeral Home, Inc., Camden, NY will be private. There will be no calling hours. Interment McConnellsville Cemetery.   Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to The Abraham House, 417 N. Washington St, Rome, NY.
